Unable to set output bus to anything other than Master Audio Bus

I'm having a weird issue where the only available bus when I'm selecting the output bus for an object is the Master Output Bus. All other options are faded out (see pic). Never encountered this before, not sure what to check.

hm, seems that all other "output buses" are "aux buses"?
