Do water footsteps even work in cube?

I'm putting my own sounds into Cube for practice by replacing the sounds in Lesson 7. I took the time to actually record water footsteps but once I generated the soundbank, that was the only terrain that didn't work. I'm not getting any clear answers from my own research other than that, maybe, 6 years ago, water didn't exist (despite the program *and* the game both having water options coded in), back when it was weapons and not wizards.
