Speaker Panner

The behavior of the Speaker Panner varies depending on the Speaker Panning setting in the Positioning tab of an object's Property Editor. By default, Speaker Panning is set to Direct Assignment, which means the channels of 2D sounds and music are assigned directly to the corresponding channels of their output bus, regardless of the position or orientation of the listener or game object. In this case, the Speaker Panner view is not available.

However, you can select either of the other two Speaker Panning options to enable the Speaker Panner view. It can then be used to adjust the way the source audio is associated with the channels of its output bus as follows:

  • Balance-Fade: The Speaker Panner contains a two-dimensional graph view with X and Y coordinates, and a circle in the center. The X coordinate controls the left-right speaker balance, while the Y coordinate controls the front-rear speaker balance. You can drag the circle anywhere within this graph view to adjust the volumes of the channels of the output bus. Channels closer to the circle will have their volume increased, while channels further from the circle will have their volume decreased.

    [Note]Note

The Y coordinate has no impact when the output bus is stereo. The side speakers of a 7.1 configuration are at their maximum level when the circle is in the middle of the graph view.

The Z coordinate only works for 7.1.4 sounds routed to 7.1.4 busses. Only the height channels are heard when Z is 100, and only the channels of the plane are heard when the Z is -100.

  • Steering: The Speaker Panner contains a three-dimensional graph view with X, Y, and Z coordinates, and a circle in the center. The X coordinate controls the left-right distribution, the Y coordinate controls the front-rear distribution, and the Z coordinate controls the up-down distribution. You can drag the circle anywhere within this graph view to redistribute the source audio amongst the channels of its output bus. The distribution will be weighted towards the location of the circle.

    [Note]Note

The Z axis is not represented in the graph view; its value is controlled and indicated solely by the Z axis slider. Additionally, it has no impact on a configuration that does not have channels in the height layer.

Interface Element

Description

Name

The name of the object.

Notes

Any additional information about the object properties.

(Graph View)

A graphical representation of the location of the circle in relation to the listener and the speakers in a 5.1 environment.

[Note]Note

The center channels are defined in the Positioning tab of the object's Property Editor, using the Center % slider.

Zooms in towards the center of the graph view.

Resets the graph view to the default zoom factor ratio of 1:1.

Zooms out from the center of the graph view.

Pan Left-Right

The coordinate along the X axis of the circle.

Default value: 0

Range: -100 to 100

Pan Front-Rear

The coordinate along the Y axis of the circle. (No impact on a stereo configuration.)

Default value: 0

Range: -100 to 100

Pan Up-Down

The coordinate along the Z axis of the circle. (No impact on a configuration that does not have channels in the height layer.)

[Note]Note

The Z axis slider is only available when the Speaker Panning mode is set to Steering, or when it is set to Balance-Fade and a 7.1.4 sound or bus is routed to a 7.1.4 bus.

[Note]Note

The Z axis is not represented in the graph view; its value is controlled and indicated solely by the Z axis slider.

Default value: 0

Range: -100 to 100
