Wwise Wave Viewer

Use Wave Viewer to load wave files, play their audio, compare them, and analyze their waveforms.

Launching Wave Viewer

  • Audiokinetic Launcher: in the Audiokinetic Launcher, from the menu at left, select Wwise. Then, in the list of installed versions, from the list, select Launch Wwise Wave Viewer.

  • Windows Command Prompt: the executable is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Audiokinetic\Wwise <version>\Authoring\x64\Release\bin\WaveViewer.exe.

  • Keyboard shortcut: Wave Viewer can be configured to launch from a keyboard shortcut in the Wwise Authoring environment. Refer to Keyboard Shortcuts and Custom Commands and Creating bindings for keyboard shortcuts.

  • Exit Wave Viewer: as well as using the standard operating system commands, you can close Wave Viewer with the Esc key.

Opening files in Wave Viewer

  • Drag and drop: Wave Viewer supports standard drag and drop of files into the application from your operating system's file browser. Additionally, in Windows:

    • Drag files from the File Explorer to replace the current files.

    • Hold Ctrl and drag files from File Explorer to add to the current files.

    • Hold Shift and drag two files from File Explorer to diff (compare) the files.

  • From the menu: select File > Open (Ctrl+O).

  • Multiple files: in both of the above cases, more than one file can be selected with the standard mouse selection.

  • Windows Command Prompt: open one or more files with WaveViewer.exe <file1> <fileN>.

Playing files

  • Stop and start playback: click the viewing canvas to select a file, and press spacebar to start playback. To stop playback and reset the playhead to the beginning of the file, press spacebar again.

File information

  • File path: the file path is displayed at the lower-left of the waveform canvas. To copy it to the clipboard, right-click on the canvas and select Copy selected path. To see the file in Windows File Explorer, right-click and select Open Containing Folder.

  • File properties: to the left of the viewing canvas the following information is listed: play position (seconds), file length (seconds), number of samples, sample rate (Hz), bit depth, and channels (for example: 1.0, 5.1, or 7.1).

Comparing two files

  • Windows Command Prompt: WaveViewer.exe <file1> <file2>.

  • Wave Viewer: in Wave Viewer, use the menu File > Diff (Ctrl+D). You can also hold Shift and drag two files from Windows File Explorer to compare the files.

  • Wwise source control: Wave Viewer can be used as the diff tool for a Wwise source control plug-in. Refer to Configuring source control plug-ins.

Display tools

  • DB scaling: scales the waveform by decibels. Toggle by selecting View > DB scaling.

  • Mixdown channels: when enabled, the view shows the maximum peak found across all channels. This has no effect on a single-channel file. Toggle by selecting View > Mixdown channels. Multichannel files are indicated by the playback channels displayed at left, and by the presence of more than one waveform on the viewing canvas.

  • Normalize waveform: normalization maximizes the volume of the audio while maintaining its quality. To normalize, right-click the waveform and select Normalize waveform. Select Reset Normalize Waveform to undo.

  • Peak dB values: to view a peak value in part of a file, drag with the mouse to select a section of the waveform. The value is displayed at the selection.

  • Rectified waveform: when enabled, the view combines the minimum and maximum peaks together, and shows the absolute highest of both. Toggle by selecting View > Rectified waveform.

  • Show markers: when enabled, markers, if any, are displayed. Markers are metadata at a position in the waveform. Toggle by selecting View > Show markers.

  • Zoom: use Ctrl+Mouse wheel to zoom on the X-axis (time). Scrollbar buttons at the lower-right of the display allow you to zoom, and reset the zoom, of the X and Y axes.
