Profiling Sound In-Game

During an epic lower level dungeon raid, the frame rate slows as a burst of sound engulfs the player while a maelstrom of visual effects explodes onscreen. In order to identify the role that sound may have had in the decrease in frame rate, the game profiling and game object profiling tools could be used to analyze the performance.

You can use game profiling tools to analyze the following:

  • How the many sounds associated with monsters, visual effects, and physics objects use the platform's streaming capabilities.

  • How and when background noises, such as positional ambient sound, become virtual voices.

  • Which effect plug-ins are applied to the different monster vocalizations and how these affect CPU usage.

You can use game object profiling tools to analyze the following:

  • How the attenuation radius of the sounds for each monster interacts with that of each other monster.

  • Where game objects such as projectile magic visual effects move relative to one another and to the monsters.

  • How an RTPC driving a side-chain affects the playback of sounds associated with combat.

In the Advanced Profiler, the relationship between the Game Object, Event, Target, and Wwise Object can be traced, adding further clarity to voices displayed in the Capture Log.

Target Objects, Wwise Objects, and Busses displayed can be selectively muted and soloed to aid in the investigation and identification of sounds.

Additionally, each tab in the Advanced Profiler can open a search field where standard alphanumeric entries can filter out unmatching elements from the view.

The ability to swiftly visualize and navigate through different aspects of the project makes for great success in understanding the flow of actions being executed. In this way, the game profiling and game object profiling tools can give you a complete view of the game's soundscape in action.
