Instead of reading from an audio source stored in memory, Wwise offers the Synth One plug-in that uses Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to create a computer generated sound. This DSP plug-in is very low-cost in processing; consequently, you can use this plug-in as an alternative audio source on low-end devices to almost remove the resource usage. However, it’s best used for sounds that are artificial or non-realistic, like UI or a simple and short feedback sound from an interaction. Let’s use Synth One to generate a miscellaneous picking up Sound SFX.
-
In the Platform Selector, make sure Android is selected.
-
In the Search field, search for ‘Pickup Misc’ and select the Pickup_Misc Sound SFX.
In the Object Tab you’ll see two audio sources. One WAV audio file named Pickup and a Wwise Synth One named Pickup_SynthOne.
-
In the Contents Editor at the bottom of the Object Tab, ensure the WAV is enabled for Use and right-click the indicator in top of the Use column and select Unlink.
-
Select the Pickup_SynthOne Use option.
-
In the Transport Control, click Play to listen to the result.
The Android platform will now exclusively be using the Synth One plug-in instead of playing a WAV file, and since the sound is computer generated, it won’t be using runtime memory.
