Sample Rate Automatic Detection

While the VolcanicBoulder runtime memory usage was reduced significantly, other sounds in the same ShareSet were affected by this change as well. You could solve this by making a new Conversion Settings ShareSet or setting the Conversion Settings mode to Custom, but that would remove your ability to have a category of sounds in the same collective overview. Instead, you can use the Sample Rate Automatic Detection. This option estimates individual Sample Rates for each audio source assigned to the ShareSet, so that you can have independent and tailored Sample Rates in the same Conversion Settings ShareSet. Let’s now enable Automatic Detection on the Destruction_General Conversion Settings ShareSet.

  1. In the Project Explorer’s ShareSets tab, go to Conversion Settings > Objects and select the Destruction_General Conversion Settings ShareSet.

  2. Select the Sample Rate list on your working platform and choose Auto Low.

Know that setting the Sample Rate to Auto Low won’t just reduce sample rate on every audio source within the Conversion Settings ShareSet. Instead, it will allow the automatic detection to set a lower sample rate for the audio sources it sees fit. A very complex audio source can easily get the same result with Auto Low, Auto Medium, or Auto High options, whereas a very low-passed audio source can get reduced significantly.

  3. Click Convert... followed by Convert in the dialog.

The Automatic Detection estimates a Sample Rate automatically. If you want to fine-tune the Automatic Detection, you can change the threshold preferences for each of the three modes.

  4. From the Project menu, select Project Settings.

  5. In the Project Settings dialog, select the Source Settings tab.

The Sample Rate Automatic Detection is based on the volume levels of an FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis, so you can decrease the volume thresholds to ensure higher sample rate estimates on the automatic detection. The Low quality threshold of -30 can be very rough on the sample rate estimate, so let’s decrease it to -35.

  6. In the Volume Thresholds group box, set the Low Quality to -35.

  7. Press OK.

By decreasing the Volume Threshold you ensure a higher sample rate for all audio sources assigned to a ShareSet with such settings. If your audio files allow it, you can switch to a better mode for your own games to save memory, but with WAG we want to preserve a safe sample rate detection.
