Installing and Running the Wwise Audio Lab

Prerequisites

Before installing the Wwise Audio Lab, you must do the following:

  • Install the Audiokinetic Launcher and Wwise. Refer to Installing Audiokinetic Launcher and Installing Wwise through the Launcher. Note, you must install the version of Wwise corresponding to the version of WAL you plan to install. For example, if you plan to install WAL 2023.1.1, you must install Wwise 2023.1.1.

  • If you plan to install the uncompiled Unreal Engine source project, install the version of Unreal Engine indicated in the Launcher next to the WAL version you plan to install.

infoNote

The Wwise Audio Lab uses the AK Convolution Reverb, Mastering Suite, and Reflect plug-ins. These plug-ins are included in the pregenerated SoundBanks. However, if you want to modify the Wwise project and regenerate the SoundBanks to hear your changes in Unreal Engine, you must install these plug-ins with the appropriate version of Wwise and they must be properly licensed. To obtain these licenses, go to Register a Project and indicate that it is a non-commercial project with more than 200 media assets. Specify that it is for WAL.

If you're new to Wwise, we also recommend reading Wwise Fundamentals to gain some background knowledge before proceeding.

System Requirements

The precompiled WAL runs on Windows and Mac. If you choose to run the uncompiled Unreal Engine source project, refer to the software and hardware requirements of Unreal Engine. However, keep in mind that in-game settings (especially the Graphics Options) can lower rendering quality and system demands, thereby allowing weaker machines (with lower RAM, CPU, or graphic card power) to run WAL.

Installing WAL

To install the Wwise Audio Lab:

  1. In the Audiokinetic Launcher, select Samples > Wwise Audio Lab (Unreal).

  2. Under INSTALL A NEW VERSION, select the desired Wwise Audio Lab version and click Install.

  3. On the next page, select the desired packages:

    • Wwise Audio Lab: (Recommended) This is the precompiled standalone version of WAL, which works with the accompanying Wwise project using the Remote Connection feature. This is ideal for both students and professional sound designers who either are not familiar with Unreal Engine or simply do not want to work with the source project.

    • Unreal source project: This is the uncompiled version of WAL. Like the precompiled version, the accompanying Wwise project offers real-time tweaking and mixing of the relative properties of your objects. This version also makes it possible to regenerate SoundBanks after modifying the Wwise project. Due to its greater complexity, this version is intended either for those familiar with Unreal and the Wwise Unreal Integration, or eager learners who want to delve deeper into WAL.

Refer to Modifying the Wwise Project for the essentials of working with WAL using its source projects.

  4. Click Install.

When the installation is complete, a success message appears.

Running the Wwise Audio Lab

With either the precompiled or uncompiled version installed, you can now run the Wwise Audio Lab.

Running the precompiled Wwise Audio Lab:

  1. In the Audiokinetic Launcher, select Samples > Wwise Audio Lab (Unreal).

  2. Under INSTALLED VERSIONS, click Run Wwise Audio Lab to the right of the desired WAL version.

After a short loading period, the precompiled WAL opens.

Running the uncompiled Wwise Audio Lab:

  1. In the Audiokinetic Launcher, select Samples > Wwise Audio Lab (Unreal).

  2. Click the Open in Unreal button to the right of the desired WAL version.

Unreal Engine opens and loads the WAL project.

  3. Press the Play button in the Viewport.

Press the spacebar if you want to access the in-game menu.
