Using Strata with SFX Database Applications
You can import Strata source files and rendered audio files into any SFX database
applications such as Basehead, Soundminder, Soundly, and REAPER’s database feature in its
media explorer.
The embedded metadata in Strata files facilitates search and categorization in
these applications. In addition, each collection has a companion SoundBook spreadsheet that
lists all of the embedded data. You can use the SoundBooks to create your own customized
database.
Creating a Strata Database in REAPER
REAPER has a powerful built-in database feature. You can create a Strata
database or add it to an existing database to simplify searches for projects, audio
files, and documents. In the new database, you can create sub-databases for each
collection, such as Historical Firearms, Vehicles, and so on.
Before you create a database, add the recommended user columns as described in
Adding Metadata Columns to REAPER Media Explorer.
To create a REAPER database:
In the menu bar, click View > Media
Explorer. The media explorer opens.
In the folder hierarchy at the left of the window, click My Computer. A list of drives appears in the
file list.
Navigate to the Strata folder.
Right-click the folder and in the shortcut menu, click Make database from folder. REAPER scans the contents
of the collection folder and creates a database.
Updating the Strata Database
Strata consists of a growing number of individual sound collections. After you
create the initial Strata database in REAPER, you can update it as required whenever you
download a new collection.
To update the Strata database:
In the media explorer, right-click the database name in the folder
hierarchy at the left of the window, then click Scan
database for new files. The database is updated with the new
collection content.
Using Metadata for Searches in REAPER
After you create the Strata database and add the various user columns to the
REAPER media explorer, you can configure the media explorer to search the metadata in
the user columns. With this additional configuration, you can save time and simplify
your workflow because you can remain focused on REAPER while you search; there is no
need to use additional third-party libraries or perform focused searches outside of
REAPER.
The REAPER database is optimized and fast, so you can find and audition any
Strata sound, project, or subproject almost instantly.
To enable metadata search in REAPER:
Right-click the search filter box at the upper right of the media
explorer, and ensure that User Columns
is selected. Subsequently, any text you type in the box filters by the
data in the configured user columns as well as the other selected
options.
