Working with Triggers

Like all game syncs, a Trigger is a Wwise element that is called by the game and then defines a specific response in Wwise to accommodate what is happening in the game. More specifically, a Trigger responds to a spontaneous occurrence in the game and launches a Stinger. The Stinger, which is a brief musical phrase that is superimposed and mixed over the currently playing music, is a musical reaction to the game. For more information about how Triggers and Stingers work together, see Using Stingers.

For example, in a fighting game, when a character lands a powerful kick, you can intensify the impact of that action with a Stinger. Before you create a Stinger, you must create a Trigger, perhaps named High kick, to be called at these points in the game, and you must choose a short Music Segment to associate with the Trigger.

The following illustration demonstrates the Trigger mechanism that plays a Stinger at a key point in the game.

In Wwise Authoring, Triggers are represented by this icon: .

Creating Triggers

You can create Triggers in the Game Syncs tab of the Project Explorer.

To create a new Trigger:

  1. In the Project Explorer, switch to the Game Syncs tab.

  2. In the Triggers section, do one of the following:

    • Select a Work Unit or Virtual Folder and in the Project Explorer toolbar click Create new 'Trigger'.

    • Right-click a Work Unit or Virtual Folder and select New Child > Trigger from the shortcut menu.

  3. Replace the default name with one that best represents the Trigger.

    [Note]Note

Each Trigger name must be unique and consist of only letters, digits, and underscores. Use either a letter or underscore as the first character.

Deleting Triggers

Keep in mind that if you delete a Trigger that is assigned to a Stinger, the association with the Music Segment for the Stinger is removed.

To delete Triggers:

  1. In the Project Explorer, switch to the Game Syncs tab.

  2. In the Triggers section, select the Triggers you want to delete and do either of the following:

    • Press the Delete key.

    • Right-click and select Delete from the shortcut menu.
