User Preferences

You can customize your Wwise software by specifying the following user preferences:

Interface Element

Description

Confirmation messages

Turns on all confirmation messages (alerts about operations that cannot be undone) that were previously turned off when the user selected Don't ask me again.

External Editors

Prompts the Windows Open dialog (or the Mac Finder) for browsing to an external audio file editor to add to the list of editors that can be accessed directly from Wwise. Once added, you can edit imported audio files with your favorite tool without interrupting your work in Wwise.

Deletes the selected external audio file editors from the list.

Sets the selected editor as the default and moves it, if necessary, to the top of the list. The first listed editor is always the default.

[Tip] Tip

You can use the Ctrl+E shortcut to launch the default external editor on the selection in most views.

Opens a search field where standard alphanumeric entries filter out unmatching elements from the view. Learn more in Using Tables.

Click the Close icon to the left of the search icon to close the search field and remove the filter.

[Note] Note

The searches do not include elements in collapsed nodes of the List View, Query Editor, MIDI Keymap Editor, and Reference View.

Click the Configure Columns... shortcut (right-click) option from the column header band.

The Configure Columns Dialog opens. Specify which columns to display and their order.

Name

Specifies the name of the external audio file editor.

Path

Defines the location for the external audio file editor.

Start Mode

Defines the start mode for the external editor application when simultaneously opening several audio files.

  • Single Process: With each "Edit in External Editor" request, Wwise will start one single process and pass the list of files to edit as arguments to the process. This is the default value and it is recommended for most editors, which support being passed multiple files in the arguments.

  • Multiple Processes: With each "Edit in External Editor" request, Wwise will start one process per file to edit. Wwise passes one file to edit as the argument of each process. Select this option when the audio editor does not support being passed multiple files as the arguments.

Opens the Windows Open dialog box, where you can browse to the location of the audio file editor's executable.

User Interface Workflow

Inspect objects when selection changes

Enables, by default, the direct display of the object's content without the need to double-click. This setting is effective in all views, including the Project Explorer.

When disabled, a double-click is required to show the object's content.

Enable High DPI support

Optimizes Wwise for a High DPI display, such as on a 4K or 5K monitor.

When disabled, Wwise will shrink to a ratio equivalent to the number of pixels on a standard display.

Sound Engine

Audio System

Specifies the system API used for audio output. It does not affect the game sound engine.

  • Detect - The Wwise default, wherein Wwise looks for the first matching system based on a hierarchy where it looks first for XAudio2, then WASAPI, and finally DirectSound.

  • WASAPI - The Windows Audio Session API, also used on Mac. Refer to MSDN for more information about WASAPI.

  • XAudio2 - A Windows-shipped cross-platform audio API from Microsoft. It typically yields low latency and has been available since Windows XP.

  • DirectSound - A deprecated Windows-shipped audio API from Microsoft. DirectSound might be more compatible with older computers. It has been available since Windows 95.

  • After the Audio System API options above, any ShareSet created in the Audio Devices folder is listed.

    [Tip] Tip

Plug-ins can be set up in Wwise by advanced users to offer other Audio System options. Refer to the SDK documentation and the sample project (<Wwise Installation>\SDK\samples\Plugins\AkSink\Sources) to learn more about creating an Audio Device sink plug-in.

Output Buffer Count

Specifies the number of output buffers the Wwise authoring tool will use when playing sounds and motion effects, balancing output stability versus latency for the current user.

[Note] Note

The Output Buffer Latency values do not affect the game sound engine buffer size.

Samples Per Output Buffer

Specifies the number of audio samples per output buffer, balancing output stability versus latency.

Output Latency

Indicates the output latency, as determined by the output buffer parameters.

Music Track look-ahead time (ms)

Specifies the amount of time reserved by the sound engine so it can seek the streaming data. This track-latency time is useful to avoid de-synchronization or voice starvation problems when playing back your music objects in Wwise, which result from the fact all objects are streamed when played back in the Wwise authoring application, even if the stream option has not been selected.

Default value: 200
Range: 0 - 10,000
Units: milliseconds

Background Processing

Analyze WAV files to find peaks and prepare them for HDR playback

Specifies if the AKD files are automatically generated in background when the WAV files are imported or modified. The AKD files store the following WAV file analysis data:

  • Peak information to display the waveform

  • Loudness analysis for the loudness normalization

  • RMS analysis for the HDR envelope

It is not recommended to disable this option.

MIDI

Display Middle-C As

MIDI notes are mapped on a fixed numerical range: 0 - 127. The MIDI specification defines the note number 60 as middle-C and all other notes are relative. There is a discrepancy that occurs between various models of MIDI devices and software programs to which octave of C is considered middle-C.

This option specifies what octave of C is considered middle-C. The possible mappings are:

  • C3: MIDI note range is C-2 to G8

  • C4: MIDI note range is C-1 to G9

  • C5: MIDI note range is C0 to G10

Default value: C4.

Documentation

Source

Specifies the documentation format, online help on the audiokinetic.com website or the Wwise Help CHM, used for the contextual help.

Language

Specifies the language (English, Japanese, or Simplified Chinese) used for the documentation.

The default language is the operating system's language, unless it does not exist or until this setting is modified.

Saves the changes you have made and closes the User Preferences dialog box.
