Mining crystals is hard work. When the crystals meet their breaking point, they scatter with a clear resonance throughout the cave. No crystal breaks sound alike, but they are distinguished by their own tonality and amplitude. Randomizing voice characteristics allows for an even more unpredictable soundscape.
All audio structures in Wwise allow variation using the Randomizer. This feature can be used on a variety of properties, like volume or pitch, and it’s represented by a Randomizer Indicator next to a property. As the amount of randomization is yet to be determined in-game, any filtering needs to be processed at runtime. Depending on how much processing power you need to save, or how essential the variation is to retain, the Randomizer can be excluded from specific platforms by unlinking it. Let’s now enable variation on the Destroy_Rock Random Container, but exclude the randomization from mobile platforms.
-
In the Search field, type ‘destruction rock’ then select the Destruction_Rock Random Container.
Let’s apply a High-pass filter on the Destruction_Rock Random Container, so the density of heavy stones will vary by reducing low frequencies.
-
Double-click on the Randomizer icon and set Enabled to selected.
Good practice is to first try out what limits you’re aiming for by dragging the slider to some value, clicking play a few times to evaluate the effect and repeating this until you’re satisfied.
-
Set the Max Offset property to 30.
The High-pass filter will now be applied to all platforms. To exclude the High-pass filter from a specific platform, you need to first pick a platform and then unlink the property.
-
From the Platform Selector click the desired mobile platform, in this case Android.
-
Right-click the Link/Unlink Indicator to the left of the High-pass filter property field, and select Unlink.
Notice that the Link/Unlink Indicator will now be fully colored.
Unlinking will unlink both the randomization and the value entered in the property field.
-
Deselect the Enabled check box, so no filter or Randomization is applied.
You’ve now enabled randomization using the High-pass filter on all platforms except Android.
