All Virtual Voice settings can be found in the Advanced Settings tab. Likewise, here you’ll find a Playback Priority, which is used to define the importance of an audio structure.
The values ranges from 1-100, with 100 being top priority. All priorities in WAG have been prepared except the ones you’ll be asked to set. Good practice is to come up with a table or guidelines that fit the context of your game, so the priority values makes sense in relation to each other.
For WAG, we constructed this table:
Priority |
Type |
Examples |
---|---|---|
~100 |
Essential |
UI/Menu, Cinematic Events, Music, Dialogue |
~90 |
Interaction or Feedback |
Weapon Impacts, Item Pickup, Magic |
~80 |
Harmful things |
Enemy attacks, Volcanic Boulder |
~60 |
Non-harmful things |
Enemy Movement, Crate destruction, Coin Spawn |
~50 |
General SFX |
Footsteps, Doors, Environment Objects |
~30 |
Nice to have SFX |
Torches, Waterdrops, Windmill |
When picking up objects in WAG, it’s essential that the player receives audio feedback, especially when the visual representation of picking up objects is instantaneous and without animation. Even while combatting crawlers in the pine tree forest, the pickup of objects and quest items should be played to confirm action, but it’s not as important as the Wwizard voice for getting quest information. Let’s now set the priority of the Player_Pickup sounds.
-
In the Project Explorer, expand the Actor-Mixer Hierarchy > Default Work Unit > World > Player > Player and select Player_Pickup.
-
Select the Advanced Settings tab. In the Playback Priority group box, enable the Override Parent checkbox and set the priority to 90.
Evaluating your priority settings is not as transparent as, for example, setting a Playback Limit. At one point there might be many Evil Spit Plant bullets instantiated with higher priority than what you’re trying to listen for, and you won’t be able to replicate the situation in exactly the same way. As such, try to make guidelines for your priority settings and evaluate all assets collectively.
