Lesson 3

Copying the Template Object

You’re going to build a B section for the combat music using additional audio files created by the composer. The instrumentation and structure of the B section mirrors the A section closely. Before importing these files, consider that for the A section you’ve already done a lot of work setting up the structure of sequence and random Sub-Tracks. Rather than building a Combat-B Music Segment from scratch, you can copy the Combat-A Music Segment to use its basic structure and simply replace the A music section with the new B music section you’ll import.

  1. Open the Lesson 3 project and in the Interactive Music Hierarchy, expand the Music Work Unit and the Combat Music Playlist Container.

You don’t want to duplicate the Combat Music Playlist Container, just the Combat-A Music Segment. This is because you’ll later use the same Combat Music Playlist Container to manage the order of when the various Music Segments you’re going to create in this lesson will play, just as you did in Lesson 1.

  2. Right-click the Combat-A Music Segment and choose Copy.

  3. Right-click the Combat Music Playlist Container and choose Paste.

You see that the Combat Main Music Segment is duplicated and the object name is appended to say Combat-A_01.

  4. Right-click the Combat-A_01 Music Segment, choose Rename, and rename the object Combat-B.

  5. Expand the Combat-B Music Segment.

You see that the content is identical to the Combat Main A Music Segment. You may have noticed in the last lesson that the filenames of the audio files included an A designation. This is because in the compositional phase what you were about to do was anticipated, so the content was exported in a way that makes it easy to identify which part of a musical theme the audio file belongs to. Because you’ll end up with similar sounds playing similar parts, it would be very difficult to determine which segment the audio file belongs to by listening alone. Again, you see that having a naming convention is critical.
