Copying a Clip

The Arpeggio track found at the top of the Music Segment Editor provides a synthetic pulse to the music. Although only one version of this track has been provided, it’s possible to make additional variations in order to create more variety for the part. This involves copying the entire track to a new track, where you’ll then make edits to create the variations.

  1. Scroll to the top of the Music Segment Editor, right-click the Arpeggio clip and choose Copy.

The Arpeggio clip is copied to the clipboard, but you need to create a new track for it to be copied to.

  2. In the Music Segment Editor, right-click just above the Arpeggio track and choose New Track. Name it Arpeggio2.

A new Music Track is added to the bottom of the Music Segment Editor.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Music Segment Editor.

  4. In the Project Explorer, expand the Combat-A Music Segment.

You’ll also see that the new Music Track is represented but it’s displayed in red. This is because the track doesn’t contain any associated clips. You must first designate to which Music Track you want the copied clip to be placed.

  5. First click the Arpeggio 2 Music Track header to select it.

Because clips could be placed anywhere on the timeline, you need to indicate where the clip will be placed within the selected track. You can use the Play Cursor to do this.

  6. Position the Play Cursor at the beginning of bar 1, right-click the Arpeggio 2 track header and choose Paste Clip(s) at Play Cursor.

The clip from Arpeggio track is duplicated on the new Arpeggio2 track.

Before you start editing the new Arpeggio2 Music Track, you’re going to go ahead and create an additional Arpeggio variation track called Arpeggio3.

  7. Repeat steps 2 through 6 and create an Arpeggio3 Music Track.

Now that you have what will be variations of the same track, it’s a good idea to go back and add a variation number to the original Arpeggio Music Track's name so that it’s clear that is one of several variations possible.

  8. Go back and rename the original Arpeggio track to Arpeggio1.
